Insights from the 38th PSMO Annual Convention

The 38th Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO) was held last October 8 to 11, 2024 at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. With the theme of “PRECISION MEDICINE: Driving the Future and Optig representatives from PiVOT the opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions on the latest advancements in cancer treatment and research, as well as the future of cancer care.

Raymond Val Padua, Line Manager

“The convention was an invaluable opportunity to learn about cutting-edge clinical practices and emerging trends in oncology, as well as to engage in knowledge-sharing with medical professionals from across the country.

One of the highlights of my experience was the opportunity to interact with Principal Investigators and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in the field. These conversations not only enriched my understanding of ongoing clinical trials but also helped foster new professional relationships. Through these interactions, I was able to establish stronger rapport with key figures, laying the groundwork for future clinical trial collaborations across various regions in the Philippines. This expanded network offers exciting potential for advancing research and improving healthcare outcomes nationwide.”

Sweet Hazel Heraldo, Clinical Research Associate II

“This is the first PSMO Conference that I’ve had the privilege of participating in. There was a great anticipation on my part especially when I first received the Programme for this 3-day event. As I’ve been handling an Oncology Diagnostic Non-Intervention Study for the past 2 years, I was able to appreciate the topics presented by the esteemed speakers and was able to relate it to my own experience.

I most appreciated the topic on the Multi Tumor Board for Cancer Case discussions as this is an integral part of the recruitment process for the study I am handling. I also loved the insightful talk about the socio-economic barriers in attaining personalized treatment care for diagnosed cancer patients as well as the Ethical Implications of Biobanking. I would consider attending the PSMO as a milestone for my career and I am looking forward to having more chance for continuous learning. Thank you PiVOT for this opportunity!”

Celine Rose S. Kam, Clinical Research Associate I

“Though almost all topics were technical and catered specifically for medical practitioners, I was glad to be able to attend this prestigious event and listen to the doctors share their expertise in the field. This is the first time I attended an oncology-focused conference since most of my previous ones were related to nutrition.

The topics discussed were eye openers as there are still methods and medications that can help cure or alleviate cancer. I learned that there is still hope for other people most especially if the cancer is detected at its earlier stage. In application to the clinical trial setting, the same practices are still being applied in accordance with the GCP.”

Julius Stephen C. Cuartero, Clinical Research Associate

“This was my first time attending a major convention such as PSMO (Philippine Society of Medical Oncologists). I met a lot of amazing people who shared the same common goal of improving healthcare for cancer patients. I also had the opportunity to meet new potential principal investigators as well as our ongoing principal investigators.

The discussion regarding biobanking in the Philippines and the challenges and ethics relating to it was an eyeopener. As of this day, we only have UP-PGH as a biobank. The biobank contains samples that may contain certain genetic mutations that are associated with different types of cancers. Further studies may help earlier detection of cancer from certain genetic mutations.

Attending this convention as a CRA will help me in future oncology trials as I can incorporate my learnings and observations. It also enabled me to connect with other stakeholders and allied healthcare professionals who can be our future investigators on an oncology trial.”
